Woman of the Month: Amal Clooney

This month we're celebrating superwoman herself; Amal Clooney.  Beyond her infamous husband and incredible style, Amal Clooney is also a respected lawyer for human rights, making inspiring changes to so many lives across the globe. Here's a peek into Amal’s incredible life and career!

 

Many were introduced to Amal in 2014 with her engagement to Hollywood actor George Clooney. During this time, she was already an incredibly successful London barrister specialising in international law and human rights, leading a career representing high profile individuals like the Maldives’ former president Mohamed Nasheed and the head of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange. Although her marriage heralded new fame and ‘celebrity’ status, she has maintained in past interviews that she doesn’t believe the spotlight has affected her work.

 

“I think it’s wonderful celebrities would choose to spend their time or energy or the spotlight that they have to raise awareness about these causes,” she said. “I don’t really see myself in the same way because I’m still doing the same job that I used to do before.”

 

Born in Lebanon as Amal Alamuddin, her family fled to England during the 1980s Lebanese Civil War. Being incredibly open about her family’s experiences as refugees, Amal uses her celeb status to raise awareness about refugees and fight for justice in "courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world" with her & her husband's Clooney Foundation for Justice.

 Her philanthropic efforts with her husband have also led her to work closely with UNICEF and travel to remote communities across the world. Amal has been recognised for her humanitarian efforts and named a Forum Young Global leader. Not to mention, she is also a strong advocate for women’s rights and a huge supporter of the #MeToo movement.

 

Thought being a human rights lawyer as well as running foundations to fight for justice worldwide was demanding? Throw being a mother to twins in the mix! Fortunately having enough wealth to hire nannies, Amal has stated in the past that she makes sure to balance parenthood by making quality time with her children every day.  Her relationship with George Clooney has also been so incredibly public over the years, however this hasn’t stopped him from gushing about his wife in interviews (how could you not?!).  

 

"She is this remarkable human being and now mother, which is something I suppose you should assume she would be wonderful at as well," he said. "When you see it in person, it makes you feel incredibly proud and also incredibly small."
